Painting Information

There are five of them in this little picture - five cripples, strangely dressed, with grotesque hats. At the bottom right, a figure walks away carrying an object resembling a sea snail shell. And the cripples are each heading in a different direction on their short wooden prostheses.

The plot of the work, one of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's last, remains a mystery. Perhaps the painter wanted to represent the five layers of society: the king with his cardboard crown, the soldier with his paper helmet, the bourgeois with his beret, the peasant with his hat, and the clergyman with his paper mitre.

Even in this small work Bruegel emerges as an artist of the life of the Flemish peasants whom he so often depicts with their festivities, dances, and traditions. He was also able to paint nature - the Flemish lowlands and its lakes. The series The Months, commissioned by a wealthy financier from Antwerp, proves it. In the five paintings (known today from this series), the life of the peasants unfolds to the rhythm of the seasons and reveals a soulful, living world.
