Painting Information

There is hardly in the field of painting a more valuable document for life of the Parisian bourgeoisie and artists during the Second French Empire than this painting, in which among the many elegant women and men we can recognize the fashionable composer Offenbach, the writers Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier and Chanfleury. Manet created his paintings under the influence of the large-scale compositions of Courbet ("The Funeral at Ornansy" and "Atelier") and of lived experience. This are the factors that shape his artistic style. Unlike them, Manet does not strive for drama, nor for a unified harmony in the impact of the dyes, but towards a descriptive depiction by highlighting individual patches of colour. But despite its varied colours, the painting is unified through the black colour of the coats and cylinders, and by the rhythmically placed trunks. The counterbalancing foliage of the trees in turn highlights the patches of the light tones and the playful arabesques of the iron chairs.
