Painting Information

The fresh tones that the artist loves so much become much brighter. This cheerful, radiant, youthful beauty dates from the year in which the group of Impressionist painters was formed. Manet worked it in the garden adjacent to his dwelling, capturing a single moment - the moment when the girl caught by the fence gazed into the spreading white smoke of the passing train. This smoke is simply the epitome of the fleetingness of the minute, the suddenness and transience of feelings. He contrasts it with the immobility of the young woman, the girl, the dog that came out, and, above all, with the steady and eternally black fence. From this juxtaposition is born the painting's incomparable charm. And the contradiction is emphasized by certain details, such as the contrast in the colours of the two dresses and in the friezes of the two women. The young woman's hair is scattered from under her hat, while the naked girl has gathered it into a bun.
