Painting Information
In 1889, while residing in Giverny with Alice Hoschede and their combined families, Claude Monet embarked on a journey to Fresselines, a village in the Massif Central region of France, accompanied by his friend, critic Geffroy, and two others. Captivated by the area's untamed beauty, Monet initiated a series of artworks depicting the Creuse River.
The Creuse consists of two rivers, the Grande Creuse and the Petite Creuse, which converge below Fresselines, forming a vast body of water. Known for its rough landscape and stone quarries, Monet described the region's 'awe-inspiring wilderness' in a letter to Alice. He ultimately produced 24 paintings of the striking valley, the majority of which were created from the same viewpoint.
These works marked Monet's first attempt at painting a series. Among his entire oeuvre, they are the most somber and melancholic, often completed as daylight faded.
In 1889, Monet showcased these paintings alongside sculptures by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) in an exhibition coinciding with the Universal Exhibition. This event, and particularly the Creuse paintings, received positive reviews, contrasting with the public's earlier disappointment with his Antibes paintings. Pissarro had commented on the Antibes series in a letter to his son, stating, 'they are beautiful, but Fénéon is right; while good, they do not represent a highly developed art.'
