1606-1669

Dutch Baroque Painter

Rembrandt (1606-1669) was born in Leiden. He studied with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, then returned to his hometown. Too young, he established himself with an original interpretation of the effects of light and darkness, with incredible skill in expressing feelings, with technical virtuosity and with a painterly richness that evoked admiration. He created works in all genres - portraits, landscapes, religious and mythological scenes, historical canvases, along with a series of self-portraits that he would paint until his final days, in an intimate and incredible dialogue with old age and death.

In 1631 he settled in Amsterdam. His group portraits, including the celebrated "The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" (1632), as well as those of prominent bourgeois distinguished by monumental composition, elevated him as Amsterdam's most revered painter. In the prime of his maturity, Rembrandt experienced a vivid period; his works shine with a precious radiance, displaying exceptional technical mastery. "The Night Watch", completed in 1642, marks the triumph of these auspicious years.

After 1650 came the great masterpieces. He put all his ambition as a painter of historical canvases into magnificent works recreating biblical episodes.

Towards the end of his life Rembrandt was crushed by heart and financial setbacks, but he did not cease to paint, his texture was ever understated and free, an expression - even in his last works - of his creative power and deep identity.
