1890-1918

Austrian Secession/Expressionist Painter

One cannot help but be transfixed by the urgency in Egon Schiele’s lines - as if every twist of the body or tension in the face demands confrontation. Each painting or drawing seizes on what it means to be human, exposing the fragile boundary between life and desire. This quality, so distinctive and sometimes unsettling, ties directly to the uncompromising path he carved through early 20th-century European art. For many, it is precisely this almost fevered energy that sets him apart as a key force within Expressionism.

Schiele was born on 12 June 1890 in Tulln, Lower Austria. From the start, his obsessions were clear: trains, sketches, and a relentless desire to depict reality as he saw it. Even as a child, he seemed more compelled than curious, a trait that occasionally unnerved those around him. His father, a station master who regarded his son’s artistic aspirations with skepticism, destroyed a number of these early drawings. Yet Schiele’s passion for creativity refused to dim, spurred on by a restless imagination.

His significant turn came when he encountered Gustav Klimt, an established figure in Viennese cultural circles. Klimt bought some of Schiele’s drawings, introduced him to useful patrons, and served as an advocate for the younger artist. These connections helped Schiele navigate the vibrant but often cutthroat art world of early 1900s Vienna. Though his early works bear Klimt’s imprint - with nods to Art Nouveau stylization - Schiele soon embarked on his own path. The figures in his paintings contorted beyond decorative boundaries, capturing a raw directness that many found unsettling.

Before these breakthroughs, though, tragedy struck: Schiele’s father died from syphilis, leaving him in the care of an uncle who tried nudging him toward a more conventional career. But Schiele’s response was to throw himself deeper into art. He left Vienna’s School of Arts and Crafts to attend the Academy of Fine Arts, only to walk away three years later in frustration. With other like-minded rebels, he founded the “New Art Group,” determined to break free from the stuffy conservatism that, in his view, suffocated real innovation.

It is no surprise, then, that a good deal of suspicion and controversy followed him. In Neulengbach, a small town west of Vienna, rumors about his relationships with young models culminated in his arrest in 1912. Over a hundred drawings were seized - the authorities deemed them too graphic for public view. While the more serious charges were dropped, Schiele spent a short time in prison for “indecency.” The resulting sketches of his cell remain a testament to how adversity sharpened his vision, each line etched with desperation and creative defiance.

With the outbreak of World War I, Schiele briefly served in the army, yet he continued to draw and paint whenever circumstances allowed. He captured fellow soldiers, the local scenery, even the raw tension of wartime life. By 1915, he married Edith Harms. The marriage ended his former relationship with Walburga (Wally) Neuzil, who had been an important model and companion. Themes of birth, mortality, and psychological unease started to figure more prominently, reflecting not only broader historical anxieties but personal ones as well.

By 1917, Schiele had returned to Vienna, where he poured himself into exhibitions. The Viennese scene - once wary of his daring style - began to welcome him. The 49th exhibition of the Vienna Secession in 1918 showcased fifty of his works, a strong statement of his rising status. Financial success and new commissions followed. Fate, however, intervened with the Spanish flu pandemic that swept through the city that autumn. Edith, six months pregnant, died on 28 October 1918. Schiele, too, succumbed to the illness just three days later at the age of twenty-eight.

Seen in hindsight, his short life reveals a remarkable evolution, from the boy sketching trains to the artist who peered unblinkingly at society’s taboos. If Schiele’s works continue to unsettle and enthrall viewers, perhaps it is because they hold nothing back. Flesh and emotion tangle on the canvas without the usual niceties of polite art. That, ultimately, remains his greatest legacy: a fearless honesty that still demands we engage with the haunting possibilities of the human figure.
