Painting Information
Egon Schiele’s "The Hermits" is exactly what you’d expect from him - a dark meditation on human frailty, bursting with psychological intensity. Schiele never bothered with conventional beauty, and this painting is no exception. It’s all about rawness - a confrontation with the messiness of existence, dressed up in black robes and skeletal limbs.
Here, we’ve got two figures - Schiele and his mentor, Gustav Klimt - but fused together in a way that makes them feel less like people and more like specters. They’re crammed into these shapeless, suffocating black cloaks, almost like they’re being swallowed by the void. There’s something grotesque about the way Schiele renders their faces - gaunt, half-dead expressions that seem to say more about suffering than companionship. Their bodies are contorted, the limbs exaggerated, the hands claw-like. Classic Schiele.
And those colors - if you can call them that. The palette is almost devoid of life. Dirty browns, murky greens, and oppressive blacks dominate. The rare glimpse of flesh is sickly pale, giving the figures an almost corpse-like feel. And yet, there’s this absurd little pop of red at the bottom - a single flower, as if mocking the whole grim affair with its defiant bloom.
Compositionally, it’s tight but suffocating. Schiele packs the canvas with their twisted forms, leaving barely any space to breathe. There’s no horizon, no escape from the weight of these two figures pressing against each other. The whole thing feels claustrophobic, like you’re being drawn into their strange, uncomfortable dance. It’s Schiele at his most intense - unflinching, unsettling, and unforgettable.
