Four dozen paintings, among which only sixteen are signed and dated, are enough to make Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) one of the foremost Dutch painters. With the exception of two landscapes, one of them the radiant and serene View from Delft, he painted recurring subjects: in interiors where nothing is happening, he mostly depicted dreamy, melancholy young women. They are reading letters, writing, playing, or engaged in some everyday activity whose simplicity the artist renders with unparalleled technicality. The light accentuates the austerity of the composition, revealing the loveliness of the women's faces and the sparkle of the jewellery. It ripples in the glare, creates an effect of transparency, creeps into the folds of the fabrics.
