Georges de La Tour Giclée Fine Art Prints
1593-1652
French Baroque Painter
Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) was born in Lorraine into a family of bakers. It was probably in Italy that he studied the painting of Caravaggio, whose influence on his work is undeniable. He was married at the age of twenty-six in Lüneville, where he settled the following year.
All too quickly his talent was recognised and the commissions kept pouring in. He painted and sold a great deal, making variations of his work which he took up again and again, repeating and endlessly perfecting. Along with the two versions of The Dishonest Card Player or The Mourning Magdalene, four different versions of The Pound Player are known today. This manner of working proves the success of the artist who knows how to take advantage of a certain clientele. Only about forty original paintings of his considerable output withstood the disasters that shook and devastated Lorraine in 1638
