Friedrich von Amerling Giclée Fine Art Prints
1803-1887
Austrian Academic Classicism Painter
Friedrich von Amerling was an Austrian portrait painter born on April 14th 1803, in Vienna Austria. He became one of the most notable and recognized portraitists at Viennese court during 19th century.
Amerling's father was gold and silversmith who provided a comfortable upbringing for their family. Friedrich's interest in art was evident early on and initially tutored by painter Hubert Maurer before continuing his studies at Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with acclaimed artists Johann Peter Krafft and Joseph Mossmer as mentors.
Amerling traveled to London in 1824 to study under Sir Thomas Lawrence, the world-renowned portrait painter. When he returned home, Amerling quickly established himself as one of Vienna's premier portraitists - with notable portraits for both Austria's Imperial family and aristocracy among his clientele.
Amerling was appointed court painter by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1835, further solidifying his reputation. His paintings characterized by vibrant color palettes, meticulous characterization and psychological depth were popular with audiences at court and beyond. Genre paintings illustrating everyday scenes also showcased Amerling's keen insight into human nature.
Amerling's work was widely acknowledged during his lifetime. In 1882 he received the Golden Cross of Merit and in 1887 by Emperor Franz Joseph I he was made a baron.
Amerling's final years were marred by personal sorrow and declining health; his wife Anna passed away in 1868 while Amerling himself suffered from heart condition before his passing away on January 14, 1887 in Vienna.
Friedrich von Amerling's legacy lives on today, as his works can be found in museums around the world - from Belvedere Museum in Vienna and Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts - as well as his influence still felt today in portrait painting circles and as one of Austria's foremost 19th-century artists.
